IES Qualification and syllabus

Eligibility Criteria


Age Limit:
                             Individuals applying for UPSC ESE exam 2013 should be between the age group of 21 -30 years as on 1st January, 2013.

Educational Qualification:

  • Candidates interested in applying for above mentioned vacancies must have obtained a degree in engineering from government recognized universities or deemed universities.
  • Applicants must have passed both A and B sections of institution examinations conducted by Institution of Engineers (India).

Syllabus for UPSC ESE 2013 examination


Written papers for the above mentioned examination are divided in objective and conventional categories.  Syllabus for engineering services examinations is as follows

General Ability test:  This paper will test applicant’s understanding of English language and business jargons associated with engineering. It will also test his observations and knowledge about current events, Indian History and Geography in general.

Civil Engineering: This paper will test candidate’s knowledge on areas pertaining to structural analysis, solid mechanics and building materials. It will also have questions related to areas of construction practice, construction planning and construction management. Competitors will need to have thorough knowledge on design of steel structures, concrete structures and masonry structures.

Mechanical Engineering: This paper will test the competitor’s knowledge on areas covering fluid mechanics and Thermodynamics. Candidates must be well versed with Cycles and IC engines, Heat transfer, refrigeration and air conditioning. The applicant must also have knowledge of fluid machinery and steam generators.

Electrical Engineering: Paper one of Electrical engineering would test the applicant’s knowledge on topics related to electrical circuits and electrical materials. Individual writing the test should be well versed with measurements and instrumentation, control systems, EM theory of electric and Magnetic fields. Paper two will have topics related to communication systems, power systems, micro-processors and power electronics. Competitor must be knowledgeable about digital and analog electrical circuits, power transformers and electrical machinery.

Electronics and Telecommunications Engineering: Part one of this paper would cover topics related to network theory, electromagnetic theory, signals and networks. Applicant must be well versed with electronic measurements, instrumentation, components and materials, Electron devices and physical electronics. Paper two in this domain covers topics pertaining to communication and control systems, digital and analog electronic circuits, computer engineering and microwave engineering.
